This qualification improves your understanding of the role and the responsibilities of community development workers and will enable you to operate in an effective and efficient manner within the communities.
COURSE OVERVIEW
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
The Occupational Certificate: Community Development
Worker (NQF 4) provides a solid knowledge, practical
and workplace foundation.
The course equips you with skills to:
- Collect relevant community information and provide communities with accurate information relevant to development initiatives
- Operate effectively in groups, teams and forums and act ethically and professionally
- Communicate the fears, concerns and needs of the community effectively
- Compile integrated community and household profiles
This full-time course (12 months) includes academic knowledge, practical skill and workplace experience, in order to ensure job readiness.

KNOWLEDGE MODULES
- Knowledge Modules will be hosted online. Attendance of scheduled classroom training will be compulsory.
- Fundamentals of Development Practice
- Fundamentals of Sociology and Developing Societies
- Fundamental Communication Practices
WORKPLACE
EXPERIENCE MODULES
- Completion of scheduled workplace training at a community development focussed organisation for a minimum of 480 workplace notional hours.
- Work placements at government departments, NPOs, & other developmental focussed community organisations
- Exposure to information collection in rural, urban, inner city or peri-urban community settings
- Exposure to the coordination of a full range of community forums and meetings
- Exposure to the operations of formal and informal structures
- Exposure to community capacity building processes
PRACTICAL SKILL MODULES
- Practical skill module training will be hosted online. Attendance of scheduled classroom training will be compulsory.
- Collect information regarding community development needs and strengths
- Identify the relevant groups of beneficiaries and stakeholders
- Participate in collaborative community dialogues and engagements
- Report progress and status of data collection to supervisor
- Execute own personal development
- Support the process of facilitating meetings and forums
- Arrange and communicate logistics for forums and meetings/events
- Mobilise community support for identified initiatives
- Record the minutes of community development forums and meetings
- Communicate the outcomes of forums and meetings to stakeholders
- Provide relevant and clear community development information to stakeholders
- Establish, mobilise and maintain community participation and support
- Support the identification of capacity building needs and the delivery of capacity building initiatives to community members
- Support intervention initiatives within communities
- Support the integration of community wellbeing indicators
- Support alignment with legislative and policy frameworks relevant to the initiatives
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 10 (or equivalent NQF Level 3)
- Proficiency in English
- Computer Literacy
- Computer Equipment
- Internet Connection
- Passion for community empowerment and in interest in social issues
- A preference for hands-on work and commitment to advocacy
